Women’s basketball aims for win against Jacksonville State

Coming off a season-opening loss, the Southern Utah University women’s basketball team will travel to Alabama to take on Jacksonville State University on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1:30 p.m.

This game can be streamed on ESPN+.

Jacksonville State
The Gamecocks enter this matchup 0-1 after dropping their season opener to Arizona State University 74-66. A year ago, JSU went 12-17 overall and 7-9 in the Conference USA.

Despite the loss, forward Bre’Anna Rhodes played a great game, scoring 15 points while adding six rebounds. Junior guard Samiya Steele added 11 points on 3/6 shooting from the field.

Defensively, Jacksonville State did a great job at forcing turnovers and turning them into points. The Gamecocks forced 17 turnovers, turning them into 15 points. If Jacksonville State can force turnovers against Southern Utah, they have a great chance of securing the win.

Southern Utah
The Thunderbirds dropped their opening game to the University of Utah 105-52. SUU struggled to take care of the ball, turning it over 24 times. Along with those turnovers, Southern Utah allowed the Utes to shoot 62.5% from the field.

Despite the blowout, freshman point guard Sierra Chambers thrived in her role off the bench. Chambers scored a team-high 15 points on 50% shooting from the field. Sydney Gandy and Samantha Johnston led the team with two threes a piece.

Daylani Ballena led the team in steals with two against the U of U.
