Southern Utah University hosted its annual Homecoming Pep Rally and Powder Puff football game on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Wearing SUU’s colors, students gathered to cheer and celebrate in the Eccles Coliseum.
At the Pep Rally, the various university sports teams hyped the crowd of students, then introduced their sport and provided information for upcoming events.
Colter Bennett, the 2024-25 Southern Utah University Student Association President, explained the importance of traditions and invited students to sing SUU’s chants with the university dance team.
“Thunder Train,” “Fight Song,” “Here We Go T-Birds” and other songs were performed before introducing this year’s Powder Puff teams over a dance battle.
The Thunder team wore red and the Thor team wore black.
The game started at 8:30 p.m. Students cheered for their teams, some making posters to support their friends.
The first quarter ended with the Thor team leading 21-7 to the Thunder team.
During halftime the Thunderettes, a group of male students, performed in place of SUU’s dance team. With a mash-up of different tunes, the boys tried out different dance styles, including the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders’ high kick. Their talents were greeted with much cheering. One of the students commented that this performance was the best part of the game.
“It was so much fun,” said Kylei Lueck, a sophomore at SUU. “I loved the halftime performance by the guys and both girls teams did amazing.”
After another 30 minutes of play and numerous flags on the field, the game concluded with the Thor team winning by 35 to 14 points.
Paige Watkins, participant and member of the winning team, expressed how much she enjoyed the event and encouraged all students to try it.
“I love it, it was so fun,” said Watkins. “I loved getting to know everybody and becoming teammates with them!”
With an evening full of laughter and entertainment, students were able to share their school spirit and experience what SUU has to offer.
