Sports Management Society Club starts back up

With the school semester well underway, the Southern Utah Sports Management Society is starting back up. On Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 5 p.m., the club will meet in the social brand room in the America First Event Center.

What’s SUSMS?
Some of you might be asking, “What exactly is the Southern Utah Sports Management Society?” SUSMS is a club for Southern Utah University students that are interested in having a career in the sports industry. It gives them the opportunity to meet other students also interested in the same field.

Along with this, students will hear from guest speakers about their experiences  working in the sports industry and network with other schools to plan for graduate programs and other career opportunities.

The SUSMS meets twice a month and will have a variety of activities and opportunities to gain  skills  to expand one’s horizon for graduate school or other programs.

Meet the staff
Ahead of the first meeting, it’s good to take a look at who is running this society and what they are excited about.

Dr. Hayden Coombs is the faculty advisor overseeing the society. Coombs is a professor here at Southern Utah University and has been very influential in getting the sports communication program built for students. One of Coombs’ classes, COMM 4707 Communication Management in Sports, was one of the reasons why this club was started.

“The SUSMS was designed to give my sports management students extra networking opportunities and allow them to go the extra mile,” said Coombs.

This originally was focused towards students going into sports management, but Coombs and his staff have bigger intentions.

“In past semesters, it’s really just been a handful of communication students,” Coombs said. “But I want everyone on campus who wants to work in the sports industry to get involved.”
