This week’s Sok Hop Live took place on Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. It was held on the outdoor stage at The Johnson Center for Community Arts, which is just a two block walk from campus. . Two different Salt Lake City bands were featured this week, and students were able to enjoy a night of music at an affordable price.
Cedar City’s Sok Hop Live, previously known as “Two Dollar Tuesday”, is a weekly event put on by Johnson Center staff and local musicians. One or two artists perform each Tuesday, filling the stage with rap, pop, rock and many more types of music. This event provides a fun hangout for college students in the middle of their chaotic school week.
A four-piece band named CAYSN opened the show this week. CAYSN traveled to Cedar from Salt Lake City to bring their music to Southern Utah. They played a large variety of pop rock , including their brand new single, “Paris”, and some familiar covers from that genre. CAYSN created a lively atmosphere with their upbeat and dance-worthy songs.
The headliners of the show, Poolhouse, closed the night with their original indie music. They highlighted many of their popular songs including “Deepcut” and a new single, “Yesterday.” Poolhouse travels all over Utah to play for events and parties, and they delivered a great experience to The Johnson Center this night.
Cedar City’s Sok Hop originated in September of 2022. It has expanded and changed over the years with the addition of the new outdoor stage at The Johnson Center and new bands each week.
Grace Parke, who runs the weekly Sok Hop, has seen this event evolve and grow over the years. Also, as a musician herself, she sees the significance of this event for Cedar City.
“There wasn’t really a music scene here, but there were a lot of talented people,” said Parke.
Parke has also seen Sok Hop from a Southern Utah University student’s perspective as a stress-free event students can attend during the week to enjoy and discover music. It benefits the students in the audience and Parke believes it is a great place for bands to come play.
Sok Hop Live offers fun, affordable and year-round live entertainment for SUU students and Cedar City locals. To stay updated on the weekly shows and featured bands, students can follow Sok Hop Live and The Johnson Center on Instagram and other social media platforms.
