Cedar City Fire Department and Cedar City Police Department responded to reports of a wildfire near 700 N 2325 W, Cedar City, UT at approximately 1:44 p.m. on Sept. 19, 2024. The fire spread 3.75 acres before being put out, its effects placing two Cedar City firefighters and one civilian in the Cedar City Hospital.
What began as a wildfire quickly spread towards nearby businesses. Although no structures were lost in the fire, some scrap material caught on fire. In a Facebook post while the fire was active, Cedar City Police Department stated that there were chemicals involved in the incident and advised people to avoid the area.
Law enforcement officers evacuated nearby businesses and practiced traffic control protocols, which ensured allowed emergency vehicles and personnel to operate safely.
CCFD was aided by Kanarraville Fire Department, Paragonah Fire Department, Parowan Fire Department, Brian Head Fire Department, Forestry Fire and State Lands fire. Together, fire crews fought to control and eventually extinguished the fire.
The two firefighters who were hospitalized from the fire have since been released.
In a recent press release, the CCPD thanked the efforts of the first responders who played a key role in putting out the fire and announced they are still investigating its cause. Updates can be found on the police department’s Facebook page.
