Thunderbirds secure first win of the season against Colorado College

Southern University Utah women’s soccer team faced off against the Tigers of Colorado College on Thursday, Sept. 5th. The match resulted in a 2-0 shutout win for the Thunderbirds, bringing their record to 1-3-1 and Colorado’s to 3-4-0. Even with the win, SUU remains at the bottom of the Western Athletic Conference. The loss for the Tigers places them in seventh in the Mountain West Conference.

First half
The first half of the game was very quiet on both fronts, leaving each team scoreless. Colorado dominated time of possession in the opening minutes, and was constantly on the attack but they did not come away with any goals. The teams had nine shots combined, yet neither of them were able to hit the goal more than once.

Second half
The second half picked up where it left off, with both teams going back and forth with no goals. However, at the 51-minute mark Southern Utah shifted the momentum. Sarah Assumma scored the first goal of the game off the setup from Whitney Gardner. Five minutes later, Assumma found the back of the net again assisted by Gardner and Yui Fujii. This accounted for Assumma’s second and third goal, Gardner’s first and second assist and Fujii’s first assist of the year.

Southern Utah’s defense did an incredible job in the second half by only allowing the Tigers to take two shots, securing the 2-0 victory.

— Goalkeeper Darya Mosallaei had three saves and did not allow any goals.

Southern Utah will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 8th, at 12:30 p.m when they host University of Denver. The game can be attended at Thunderbird Soccer Field or streamed on ESPN+.
