The Southern Utah University men’s track and field team will have two athletes representing at the NCAA Division l Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston. The meet will start on Friday, March 8, and finish on Saturday and can be viewed through ESPN+.
Senior Astley Davis will compete in the triple jump event as the No. 8 seed out of 16 competitors. Graduate student Isaiah Labra is slotted at the No. 13 spot for the one-mile run.
The men’s track and field team won the Western Athletic Conference Championship, and the women took fifth.
Astley Davis
Davis has been a force this season, breaking the indoor triple jump school record with a leap of 50-10” at the Lumberjack Team Challenge. He followed that performance with another outstanding one, crushing his own record with a jump of 53-5 at the Stacy Dragila Invitational.
In addition to a second-place finish in the triple jump at the WAC Indoor Track and Field Championship, Davis also took second in the long jump.
The preliminary for the triple jump is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. MST on Saturday, and the finals will follow right after.
Isaiah Labra
Following a first-place finish in the mile with a school-record run of three minutes and 55.02 seconds and having taken second in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter events at the WAC Championships, Labra was named the conference’s Athlete of the Year.
The graduate student has been dominant for the Thunderbirds this season and will look to finish the season strong in Boston.
The semifinal for the mile is scheduled at 4 p.m. on Friday and the final will take place at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
