Friday’s performance featured Samantha Rew playing Gerald Finzi’s Five Bagatelles, op. 23, second movement, for clarinet; Soprano, Ashley Stackhouse singing Jake Heggie’s “The Haughty Snail-King” from “Songs to the Moon;” Chris Kuhlemeier playing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concerto in B-flat Major, K. 191 second movement, for bassoon; and the concluding performance was Anthony Malachowski on piano, playing Johannes Brahms’ Intermezzo in A Major, op. 118, no. 2.
Each performer received a rousing applause from the crowd at the conclusion of their pieces—pieces that have required diligent practice and study to perform at a collegiate level.
Students majoring in music at SUU are required to perform once a semester and can sign up for a Friday of their choice. This allows for a wide variety of songs, genres, instrumentation and styles.
While this recital featured four performers, the number fluxuates on a weekly basis. Cedar City resident Bob Keith has been attending the Friday student recitals for the past ten years.
“It’s a nice way to spend an hour on Friday afternoons,” Keith said. “I enjoy listening to a nice variety of vocalists and instrumentalists.
“First, these are our own T-Birds that work hard to gain these skills and share them,” said Christensen. “Second, they are made easily accessible. And lastly, it’s the arts! Who doesn’t love the arts?”
SUU Music Department student recitals are held free of charge each Friday at 12:00 p.m. in the Thorley Music Recital Hall located just east of the Gerald R. Sherratt library.
